Turkey Dinner on a Healthy Diet

Your diet plan does not have to suffer during the Thanksgiving Day Holidays. When it comes to Thanksgiving parties, a large amount of focus is placed on the planning and the preparation of food for those on a diet. While it is always advised that you plan and prepare for your menu in advance it can be a very diet oriented meal. Here is to your Thanksgiving 2009 Dinner- on a Diet.

Set the Theme for your Thanksgiving Dinner Party

Since a Thanksgiving party is not complete without Thanksgiving decorations, there is a good chance that you will be decorating your home. If you do choose to decorate your home use ghords on your table display and natural ones outside your doorway. Some folks have bails of hay, corn stalks and pumpkins as a decorative Thanksgiving Day display.

If you decided to incorporate a Thanksgiving dinner into your Thanksgiving party, you may have prepared some of your low calorie foods and side dishes early. While you can prepare a number of dished in advance, there are some that need to be made at the last minute.

Vegetable Soups, Salads and Snacks for Thanksgiving Day Diet Dinners

Whether you are cooking a turkey or preparing a fresh salad, you may need to do your cooking on the day of, likely the morning of, your party. Even if you are just serving snacks and drinks at your party, you will want to wait until that day to start setting them out. Good snack ideas are a bean hummus or dip with whole wheat pita slices and a veggie dip for guests.  These are both low calorie, tasty and easy to prepare the day before.

Turkey

Turkey meat is one of the healthiest lean meats available but it is how you cook it in its own juices and using low calorie olive oils for basting instead of the calorie rich butter.
If you make your gravy by skimming off the fat and using water with corn starch to thicken the gravy it can reduce the calories.

Side Dishes at Your Thanksgiving Dinner

Common sense rules when you are making side dishes for Thanksgiving Day dinner from making sweet potato mashed or in a baking dish without the butter but you can use spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg as well as fresh unflavored yogurt to make your mashed sweet potato dish.

Other common side dishes include cranberries fresh is preferred which adds vitamins and low calorie flavorful plates of the delicious red berries.  Vegetables such as green beans, brussel sprouts, peas, carrots or corn can be added to your side dish selection for your guests and family.

Breads can be served but often enough are not necessary because Thanksgiving is a feast where people usually want to fill up on the turkey and veggies instead of bread.  Whole wheat buns and pumpernickel dinner rolls lightly warmed up can be served for the bread lovers in your family.

Thanksgiving Desserts

Simple traditional desserts at Thanksgiving Day is better and contain lower calories starting with pumpkin pie or a fruit pie such as apple but some diets would include a selection of fruits.
